Imagine was performed by Cee Lo Green on NBC's 2012 New Year's Eve show. The artist changed the atheistic lyric, "and no religion too," to a much more polytheistic, "and all religions true." [1] After receiving criticism for this alteration that drastically changed the meaning of the song, Cee Lo Green posted on Twitter, "Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys! I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that's all."

The song was also performed in Season 7 of the television show American Idol by David Archuleta. While performing the song in the top 20, Archuleta decided to focus only on the third verse[2], which left out all the anti-religious sentiments. Ann Powers of the LA Times speculated that Archuleta's Mormon faith caused him to avoid the anti-religious verses.[3] However, at the end of the season, during the Results performance, Archuleta performed the entire song with all three verses unaltered.[4] In Season 9 of American Idol, Archuleta was brought back to perform Imagine where he again only performed the third verse.[5]

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.
